Mangaves are a man-made group of intergeneric hybrids between agave and manfreda. Unlike agaves, x mangaves have monocarpic rosettes that produce basal offsets so the clump doesn't die after flowering. All x mangave hybrids are evergreen above freezing, but many become deciduous at much colder temperatures. By crossing x mangaves with agaves a second time, the evergreen traits are enhanced, while the purple-spotted leaves remain. The growth rate of x mangaves are also up to 3-4 times as fast as agaves, so they quickly fill a summer container. We are working on the forefront of these amazing plants and are very excited!

More Information About Mangave

The genus Mangave is an exotic botanical curiosity that was derived from a cross between a succulent agave plant and a manfreda. Crosses between two genera are somewhat rare in cultivation and extremely rare in nature. However, agave and manfreda have broken all the rules and 'hooked up' on more than one occasion to produce the attractive offspring called x Mangave. The 'x' on the left side of Mangave tells you that it is a cross between different genera. Although technically incorrect, sometimes 'Mangave' appears without the 'x', making it more convenient to sort alphabetically when searching for plants that start with the letter 'M'. At least two taxonomists (Eggli & Thiede) consider manfreda to actually be in genus agave, but we strongly disagree.

Like its Agave daddy, x Mangave is evergreen (above freezing) and like its Manfreda momma, it is polycarpic (monocarpic rosettes, but produces basal offsets and the clump doesn't die after flowering) and attracts hummingbirds. Both parents contribute drought-tolerance and an aversion to winter moisture. Keep your x Mangave roots dry in winter to prevent rot. We like them in containers.
