More Information About Hydrangea

Hydrangea is a classic plant of the flowering perennial garden. The genus Hydrangea contains about 75 species of shrubs, trees and woody vines, along with hundreds of named cultivars. Hydrangeas are grown primarily for their large flower clusters that vary in shape from flat lacecaps, to long panicles, and large, round mopheads. Our goal is to offer some of the lesser known, unique hydrangea species and selections.

Tips for Growing Hydrangea

Hydrangeas grow best in morning sun or partial shade with rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil. The large leaves of Hydrangea lose water quickly and the plants wilt rapidly when grown in too much sun or in dry conditions. Soil pH is also important, since many Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars produce flowers that turn blue in acidic soil (< 5.5).
