Operations Assistant Manager

Job Description

The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following duties effectively and efficiently:

 Management responsibilities:

•         Assisting and filling in for Administration Manager duties

•         Customer Service and Shipping team management assistance

 General operations:

•         Seasonal hiring and candidate screening/interviewing

•         Troubleshooting technology issues

•         Backup roles in shipping, plant pulling, and nursery needs.

•         Assist with marketing efforts and analytics

•         Event preparation and calendar management

 General office responsibilities:

•         Maintain shipping and office product inventory

•         Purchase and receive supplies while comparing prices of various vendors

•         Responding to customer service and membership inquiries

•         Sales assistance and POS management

 Outside vendor contract management:

•         Phone system

•         Internet system

•         Networking system

•         Various software

•         Computer hardware

•         Point of sale hardware

•         Various waste services

•         Vending machines

•         Event vendors

•         Additional general business vendors

 Some duties may require:

·          Performing physical and dirty work in all types of weather

·          Working independently or collaboratively

·          Walking on uneven surfaces, bending, kneeling and carrying heavy items (up to 30 lbs.)

·          Standing for long periods of time

·          Assisting other departments as needed

Qualifications

•         Bachelor’s degree preferred

•         Driver’s license

Job Description

  • Vegetative cuttings
  • Division of plants from pots, garden or trial beds
  • Potting of liners and bare root material
  • Plant fertilization with appropriate fertilizer at the correct rate
  • Place potted plants in correct stock locations
  • Assist with check in of incoming plants
  • Operation of farm tractors and skid-steer loader
  • Assist with daily production data entry
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

The primary working condition for this position is an outside plant nursery environment with exposure to outdoor elements, soils, and fertilizers, The environment is fast paced, and the employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds multiple times a day and stand for eight or more hours a day.

Core Gardener

Seeking Core Gardener to support the garden supervisory staff and the garden manager in maintaining Juniper Level Botanic Garden collections’ integrity and high-quality maintenance standards. This is accomplished by assisting in timely, accurate, and thorough weeding, mulching, cutting back, deadheading, and other maintenance duties; as well as working with seasonal garden staff to maintain and update garden areas.

Job Description

Garden Maintenance Support

  • Perform horticultural maintenance, including weeding, raking, watering, fertilizing, and mulching
  • Identify plants
  • Assist with installing new plants in the Garden
  • Collect plant material for propagation
  • Assist with grounds maintenance, including creating and repairing new planting beds, grading, and construction projects
  • Assist in field trials and propagation when needed
  • Repair irrigation
  • Operate machinery, including hand-tools, golf carts, and tractors
  • Help with Open House staffing, as needed
  • Other duties with garden staff as assigned

Curatorial Supports

  • Assist Garden Curator and Plant Records Supervisor with curation tasks, including labeling, planting, nursery digs, and plant identification.
  • Other duties with garden staff as assigned.

Position Overview

Irrigation Specialist (Weekend)

·         Ensure plant health by scouting plants for irrigation Friday-Tuesday, maintaining proper watering schedules for various crops, adjusting as needed for seasonal shifts.

·         Operate and maintain computerized and manual irrigation systems.

·         Perform regular checks on irrigation systems, including cleaning filters every two weeks, replacing faulty sprinkler heads, and running weekly irrigation checks.

·         Troubleshoot irrigation issues, including broken pipes or risers, and coordinating repairs as needed.

·         Oversee seasonal drain downs during winter and assist with fertigation for select plant houses.

·         Collaborate with the lead grower to manage irrigation supplies and equipment.

·         Collaborate with the lead grower to ensure plants are properly bedded based upon watering needs and space optimization needs.

·         Provide support during winter protection efforts to safeguard plant health included but not limited to venting, heater checks, open/closing doors, checking/filling portable heaters

·         Work the holiday schedules to ensure uninterrupted watering during holidays. Reconciliation time will be given to offset the holiday schedules

Growing Team Member

·         Assist the lead grower with all aspects of plant care, including pruning, fertilizing, spacing, cleaning, and repotting.

·         Follow daily/weekly worklists and maintain inventory logs.

·         Monitor plant health, identifying pests or diseases, and alerting the plant health team when necessary.

·         Ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

·         Collaborate with fellow team members across departments to support various tasks and projects.

·         Provide support during winter protection efforts to safeguard plant health included but not limited to venting, heater checks, open/closing doors, checking/filling portable heaters
