Using black flowering plants in your garden can add a bold and unique touch to your outdoor space. Combine black flowering perennials with other colors to create a visually stunning garden design.

The black color in flowers is not actually true black (the absence of pigments) but rather a very dark shade of another color, such as purple or maroon.

Some popular genera that are known for their black (or very dark) flowers include:

Amorphophallus - Voodoo lilies are exotic plants in the aroid family famous for large, dark purple flowers that have a pungent aroma. Amorphophallus konjac 'Nightstick' has a jet-black stem and patient gardeners are rewarded with a dark purple flower.

Asarum - While wild ginger are often grown for their foliage, these woodland plants produce wonderful black flowers that hide underneath the foliage. Asarum nobilissimum 'Vortex' produces huge purple and yellow flowers each with a large white eye and central vortex of dark flower.
