Andropogon 'Blackhawks' is an incredibly exciting new selection of the native (Canada south to Mexico) prairie grass Andropogon gerardii from Illinois' Brent Horvath. The 4' tall stalks on this narrow selection of big bluestem, turn dark black-purple, starting for us in mid-summer, topped soon after with terminal flowers like a miniature miscanthus. Andropogon 'Blackhawks' offers amazing design possibilities that simply didn't exist before this colored foliage breakthrough. If you'd like to attract native wildlife to your garden, Andropogon gerardii is a major food source for migratory bison, but perhaps you may want to check with your HOA before going overboard with your plantings.
