Ajuga reptans 'XXL' is a 2025 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of our supersize version of the popular Ajuga 'Black Scallop', which sported at JLBG in 2017, to create a double-size plant...most likely a ploidy mutant (extra set of chromosomes). Like its parent, Ajuga 'XXL' is also sterile, and is a clumping/slowly enlarging selection, unlike the wild spreading type that we don't allow in our garden. Planted on 1' centers, it forms a tight, weed-suppressing mat in 2-3 years. In mid-April (NC), the patches are topped with attractive 6" tall spikes of purple flowers. Moist, but well-drained soils are the key to success.
