More Information About Woody Lilies
Bold Garden Accents - (Dasylirion-Sotol, Nolina-Bear Grass, Yucca-Soapwort, Agave-Century Plant, Manfreda-Deciduous Agave, Beschorneria - False Red Yucca Plant). The group of woody lilies includes lily-related plants with evergreen parts. Woody lilies are very effective and quite happy in perennial borders and as placeholders in a foundation planting. Additionally, woody lily plants can produce some of the largest stalks of flowers that you'll ever see. Agave flower spikes can rise 30' into the air, and while Dasylirion, Nolina and Yucca plants arent nearly as large, they are still still quite impressive.
As a general rule, most woody lilies prefer to be planted where they will have dry soil in the winter, since many are from dry desert climates. Yucca plants are probably the most adaptable garden perennials of the woody lily group since they natively range across much of the US. Dasylirions (sotol), and Nolina (beargrass) are primarily restricted to the dry southwest US, with one noticable exception in the southeast US. Agave plants are the most diverse of the woody lilies, ranging from very dwarf plants to giants. Agaves have now been crossed with manfredas to produce a new genus of woody lilies, xMangave.
