More Information About Plants from China
... including Aspidistra, Amorphophallus and many more. When Pangea broke up between 80 and 200 million years ago, the existing flora was permanently divided and evolved in separate directions. China was extremely lucky and received a lion's share (or shall we say, a panda's share) of the plant kingdom. Today there are more Chinese native plants (some 31,000 species or 12% of all known plants) than native plants in all of North America. Roughly 10,000 of these species live nowhere else on earth (except maybe in your garden). Here at Plant Delights Nursery, we have an enormous on-line plant catalog and we have searched through it to create this mini-catalog of Chinese native plants that look great in the landscape.
China is the second largest country on earth and contains almost every known eco-region...deserts, steppes, plains, tropical forests, temperate forests, boreal forests, mountains, and coastal areas. Within the country there are no major geographical barriers to prevent plants from migrating and interbreeding to form new species so it is no surprise that there are so many Chinese native plants.
There are many types of Chinese native plants that gardeners here in the US love to include in their gardens such as clumping bamboos (fargesia, borinda, bambusa), ornamental grasses (miscanthus, carex), flowering perennials (anemone, lycoris), woodland plants (aspidistra, arisaema, polygonatum), groundcovers (bergenia, epimedium, liriope, ophiopogon), conifers (chamaecyparis, cryptomeria, thuja, juniperus), orchids (bletilla), and woody perennials (buddleia, boehmeria). Some of the coolest plants we sell here at Plant Delights Nursery are from China. When you are ready to buy Chinese native plants for your garden, check out our online list of Chinese native plants for sale.
