Who thought it was possible to get excited about carex in flower? We are passionate about carex, but more for their foliage until we met this game changer thanks to US National Arboretum director, Dr. Richard Olsen. Carex scaposa is one of those head-turning sedges, whose flowering usually results in a popular phrase...WTF? Native to woodland slopes and along streams in Southern China and Vietnam to 5000' elevation, this clumping sedge is composed of wide green leaves, topped for us, starting in mid-July and again in late September with 1' tall spikes of exquisite pink-plumed flowers. Average to slightly moist soils are best. Not only do humans enjoy this sedge, but honeybees have declared it a favorite as well. Carex scaposa is quite unlike any sedge we've ever grown...we think you'll fall in love as well.
