(Aster dumosus) I fell over when I saw our 2011 frost aster collection from Bibb County, Alabama come into flower. I subsequently got back up and leapt for joy when the flowers finished and the seed heads formed. Strangely, Aster pilosus is rarely cultivated, despite being native in all but the eleven most western continental states. Aster pilosus 'Bama Superstar' makes a 2' tall x 3' wide clump of woody stems, clothed in tiny linear leaves and topped with thousands of small white daisies in late summer. Although the floral show is enough reason to grow frost aster, the real joy comes as the incredible, shiny, tan, saucer-like seed heads develop in fall...a truly amazing show.
