Iris cristata 'Vein Mountain' is a 1985 We-Du nursery introduction and one of the most unique crested woodland iris selections we grow. We-Du obtained this selection of our US native iris from a plantsman in Japan when they ordered Iris gracilipes. Dick and Rene subsequently named the iris after NC's Vein Mountain, near the town of Marion. Iris cristata 'Vein Mountain' is one of the tallest clones of the dwarf Iris cristata that we grow, topping out at 1' tall. The lovely flowers, which are nestled just atop the foliage in mid-April (NC), are white with a unique blue halo just past the yellow beard...quite lovely. Well-drained woodland soils are the key for success with our native Iris cristata.
