Carex plantaginea 'Blue Ridge' is a 2015 selection of the North American native sedge (Canada south to Northern Alabama) from German gardener George Uebelhart of Jelitto Seed. George had told me about a strain of ribbon sedge that he was growing that didn't fall apart after flowering like the typical species, but it wasn't until I visited his garden and saw the plant in person that I was sold. Carex plantaginea 'Blue Ridge' forms a 10" tall x 18" wide tuft of 1"+ wide, glossy green, seer suckered foliage that adds a wonderful textural contrast in the moist woodland garden. In the southern end of its range, Carex plantaginea 'Blue Ridge' remains more evergreen, but becomes tardily deciduous further north.
