Asarum arifolium 'Anise Arrow' is a 2020 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of our selection of the southeast US native Asarum arifolium. We found this on a 2006 botanizing expedition in St. Clair County, Alabama, where it grew alongside Trillium decumbens and hepatica. In our garden, this clumping selection stood out for its vigor, leaf pattern, and dense growth. Having seen tens of thousands of this species in the wild, any clone we find worthy of introduction needs to be very special. The evergreen arrow-shaped, anise-scented leaves are mostly silver with a narrow green edge and green central pattern. In late winter, the small, pinky-sized flowers cluster just beneath the leaves. Asarum 'Anise Arrow' is superb for the woodland garden in soils that range from slightly moist to fairly dry.
