Zingiber 'Lushan Gold' is a 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a new form of hardy ginger from a Scott McMahan/Atlanta Botanical Garden expedition in Lushan, Jiangxi Province, China, where it grew at 3,500' elevation. It was evident as soon as it flowered for us, that this was something unique. Unlike the typical stoloniferous Zingiber mioga, Zingiber 'Lushan Gold' forms a tightly clumping plant, composed of 4' long arching stems, each clothed with 4" wide x 10" long green leaves. The base of the clump is laden with masses of orchid-like yellow flowers, starting for us in early July, and continuing until early September...about the time typical Zingiber mioga starts flowering. By early October, the fleshy seed heads burst open to reveal a multitude of grey fruits tipped black, and contrasted against the bright red interiors of the opening seed capsules...truly stunning! Zingiber 'Lushan Gold' is one of the most amazing new tropical-looking woodland garden plants we've tried in quite a while.
