Zingiber is the genus of the culinary ginger plant and it also contains a few exotic ornamental species. Although Zingiber is primarily a tropical genus, Zingiber mioga has proven to be amazingly hardy in temperate gardens.
Myoga ginger is a great foliage plant for moist shady sites with some fantastic variegated cultivars. In Japan the flower buds of and new shoots of Zingiber mioga are finely shredded and used as a garnish or are roasted. Zingiber is an easy-to-grow, light shade to part sun perennial that thrives in most soil as long as it is not waterlogged in winter.
