Selaginella ludoviciana 'Avery Island' is a little-known Southeast (Florida panhandle to Mississippi) coastal native spikemoss, that's quite rare, and considered vulnerable (G3 rank) through most of its range. It's first cousin to the superficially similar looking, but wider distributed Selaginella apoda. Our offering is propagated from plants on the Avery Island salt dome, the westernmost native population. Gulf spikemoss is a low-growing, spreading species that resembles a ferny version of blue rug juniper. It loves to grow in moist soils in open shade. In the wild, it's typically found growing in seeps over alkaline outcrops. In the garden, it makes a magical groundcover when happy.
