Sarcococca hookeriana 'Purple Stem' is a wonderfully compact and free-flowering Hilliers Nursey selection of the Himalayan (Southeastern Tibet and nearby China) Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna. This boxwood family member makes a superb, texturally interesting evergreen groundcover for the woodland garden. The 18" long, upright stalks are adorned with narrow, glossy green leaves. The dusty purple stems spread slowly via underground stolons, forming a 4' wide patch in 10 years. In late winter/early spring, the deer-resistant plants are laden with small but very fragrant white flowers. While Sarcococca 'Purple Stem' loves rich organic soils, ours have thrived in less than stellar soils in deep shade.
