Salvia darcyi 'Presidio' is a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a new selection of Salvia darcyi, discovered by Patrick McMillan in Presidio County, Texas. Since the Yucca Do discovered species, Salvia darcyi, is only native to the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, we assume whoever found and transplanted this to a community on the Texas/Mexico border also appreciated its superior garden traits. Salvia darcyi 'Presidio' is a much more impressive plant than the clone that's more prevalent in commerce, forming a 3' tall x 7' wide deciduous, slowly-stoloniferous mound of stalks clothed with fragrant, deltoid-shaped light green foliage. Starting for us in mid-May and resuming in early October, the clumps are topped with 20" spikes of tubular vermillion-orange flowers that tower high above the foliage, reaching 4.5' above the ground.
