This amazing, sterile hybrid between Pinellia tripartita and Pinellia cordata was introduced by New York's Glover Perennials, but has been virtually unavailable commercially. The upright, fleshy stalks emerge dark purple in mid-spring, topped with tripartite foliage which opens olive green on top and glossy purple below. The spathe and spadix are a lovely contrasting green, also held atop purple stems throughout the spring and summer. Pinellia 'Purple Dragon' is an exceptional introduction that should be a part of every woodland garden. Do not confuse this amazing selection with the purple throated form of the very fertile Pinellia tripartita, which goes by the common name purple dragon.
