The deciduous royal fern, Osmunda regalis, is truly one of the most distinctive and spectacular bold-textured ferns. The light green leathery leaves give a very tropical appearance to the garden. With adequate moisture, royal fern can reach 6' tall x 3' in width, although 4' in height is more typical. The fertile sexual fronds of royal fern are brazenly exposed in public as opposed to more modest ferns which hide theirs on the leaf backs. Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens' is a spore strain where the new fronds and stipe (fern stem) emerge purple-bronze. The pinnules (fern leaflets) are also smaller than typical, leading to a more airy texture in the garden.
