Iris versicolor 'John Wood' is an amazing 1998 selection of the US native blue flag iris that was hybridized by John Wood and registered by Everett Lineberger. The spring foliage emerges with a spectacular black-purple base and is topped, starting in mid-May, with 42" stalks of flowers, each composed of violet falls with a yellow throat and a pink zone between, all adorned with violet veining. The flowers are topped with 6 standard petals...three violet and 3 mauvy pink...quite unique and quite a show. Iris 'John Wood', which was awarded the American Iris Society's Award of Merit in 2003 and the Signa Medal in 2006, can be grown in typical garden soil or as a marginal aquatic.
