Hypoxis hirsuta is a widespread (most counties east of the Mississippi), but rarely grown US native woodland wildflower, formerly in the lily family, but now moved into its own family, Hypoxidaceae. Perfect for the rock garden, the tight clumps of upright grass-like foliage are adorned like a ring around the base with shorter flowering shoots, each topped with 2-6 attractive star-shaped yellow flowers in early spring. Although star grass can be found from woodlands to prairies, we find ours thrive the best in our sunny rock garden. The flowers are visited by tiny flies and smaller native bees.
