Erythrina 'Supply Sider' is our 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction, grown from a seed collection by naturalist Jesse Perry from the Brunswick County, NC coastal town of Supply. Once established in the landscape, the 3' tall upright spikes emerge from the ground in mid-June (NC), each bearing dozens of flaming red, tubular, lipstick-like flowers. Alongside the flower stalks are the stalks of bean-like green leaves. Erythrina herbacea forms a large underground caudex, so plant it in its permanent home. If pollinated, Erythrina herbacea forms pea-like pods with brilliant red seed. Native Americans also used a tonic made from the roots to cure urinary blockages.
