Epimedium 'Ellen Willmott' is an easy to grow hybrid of Epimedium alpinum and E. pinnatum ssp. colchicum that occurred in the UK's Warley Place garden of the Miss Ellen Willmott. Most folks found Miss Willmott a hateful sort, who never liked to share, so this epimedium only began to make the rounds after she sent a piece to Professor William Stearn, who realized it was a hybrid and named it after Warley Place. Epimedium 'Ellen Willmott' makes a fast-growing, dense evergreen patch to 3' wide in 6 years. The evergreen foliage is topped, starting for us, in mid-March with a stunning floral mass of 15" tall flowers stalks, adorned with burnt orange flowers, highlighted by a yellow cup. The new foliage that emerges as the flowers start to fade is also nicely flushed with purple.
