This 1973 collection from Soviet Georgia by the US National Arboretum's Skip March was later named by Darrell Probst. In spring, the leaves of Epimedium 'Thunderbolt' emerge olive green with a cinnamon border, and later at the onset of cold weather, the amazing deer-resistant, evergreen foliage darkens to charcoal black with contrasting green veins which form a "thunderbolt" pattern. Epimedium pinnatum 'Thunderbolt' spreads by rhizomes to form a 3' wide patch in 6 years, topped in spring with 10" tall flower spikes with pendant, open-faced, bright yellow flowers.
