(aka: Cardamine angustata) Dentaria heterophylla 'White Sprite' is a 2018 Plant Delights Nursery introduction of a 2006 collection we made in St. Clair County, Alabama. Dentaria heterophylla, commonly known as slender toothwort, is a native (Pennsylvannia south to Mississippi) woodland floodplain denizen. For us, Dentaria 'White Sprite' is an excellent companion for hellebores and primroses in the woodland garden, where it thrives in all but the driest sites. The late winter emerging pewter green foliage forms a compact 2" tall x 18" wide patch, topped, starting for us in mid March with a show of 6" tall spikes of pendant white bells. Of our many collections, we named this selection because of the excellent pewter foliage, and much better than normal floral show. Our offering is a vegetative selection, but please keep in mind that flowering size tubers are smaller than a pencil lead, so please plant it and enjoy. As with most spring ephemerals, Dentaria heterophylla has gone to sleep by June, hence you'll never find these in the box stores.
