Crinum americanum is our only North American native crinum lily, which calls the Southeast US coast home. Our offering hails from near the town of St. Marks in Wakulla County, just south of Tallahassee, Florida. Despite its more southerly upbringing, Crinum americanum 'St. Marks' has been winter hardy here for over two decades, easily handling single digits F. Crinum americanum is a bog native, that prefers moist to wet soils, although irrigated garden soils will also work. In a bog setting, it will easily spread to form a 10' wide patch in 10 years. The glossy, dark green, hippeastrum-like foliage forms 2' wide clumps that multiply via short underground runners. In late summer, the clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes, ending in clusters of large, deliciously fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers. Because it is pollinated by nocturnal sphinx moths, it makes a great spectator event as dusk approaches.
