Coreopsis linifolia 'Newport' is our seed-grown selection of the little-known Southeast US native (coastal Virginia to East Texas), from Carteret County, NC near the town of Newport, where we found it growing in a long-leaf pine, pitcher plant savannah. Coreopsis linifolia 'Newport' overwinters as a basal rosette, then in spring, looking nothing like a coreopsis, the virtually nekkid stems rise to 3' tall, clothed only in pairs of short, pencil-lead thin green leaves every 3". Seemingly out of nowhere, the clump is topped, starting for us in September with hundreds of small black-eyed Susan-like daisies which form an amazing mass of color. We grow ours in a pitcher plant bog, so fairly moist soils are the key to success with Coreopsis linifolia.
