I cannot begin to tell you how impressed we are with Carex haydenii...a native sedge from Canada south to Missouri. This amazing sedge forms a 3' tall x 5' wide elegant clump that rivals any mid-sized ornamental grass we've grown for form and sheer elegance. The flower spikes, which aren't particularly memorable, top the clump for us in late spring. A rich well-irrigated to moist soil is best, and short-term flooding isn't a problem. As is the case with most sedges, Carex haydenii is great for wildlife, being home to a number of native insects including skippers, moths, and butterflies as well as being equally important for birds including ducks and rails.
