For 2021, Plant Delights/JLBG was pleased to introduce an amazing form of the native Carex cherokeensis that our research staff (Zac Hill and Jeremy Schmidt) brought back from a 2017 expedition to Houston County, Georgia. This amazing, heavy-flowered selection has made a stunning clump to 30" tall x 4.5' wide, topped with stalks of hundreds (maybe more) of pendant, weeping flowerheads from early May (NC) through early summer. We find that Carex cherokeensis grows best in half day sun and in a slightly moist soil, although it's amazingly tolerant of some shade and soil that dries for a short time. We recommend cutting the flower stalks to the ground after they finish to eliminate the number of unwanted babies...unless you're looking for a bigger family.
