Asarum heterotropoides is an important medicinal herb in China but is almost unknown in US gardens. In the wild, Asarum heterotropoides can be found on forested mountain slopes in far northwest China in the provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Liaoning. The upright, 4" fuzzy green leaves are held in pairs, forming an attractive clump. At the base of the leaf pairs are small dark purple flowers that appear in mid-spring. In Chinese medicine, Asarum heterotropoides f. mandshuricum is used to cure a variety of ills including headaches, nasal obstruction, cough, and the common cold.
