Asarum asperum is an evergreen, clump-forming, wild ginger from central Japan that has been an excellent performer in our garden trials. Each Asarum asperum plant will offer different leaf patterns, but the most common is a green leaf with a wide central stripe of silver. The unusual, tri-lobed, glossy brown flowers occur beneath the leaves in March (NC). Asarum asperum forms a tight 3" tall x 1' wide clump in the woodland garden, where average to slightly moist soils are perfect.
