Selaginella rupestris 'Bald Knob' represents cutting-grown plants from our original 2001 collection in Franklin County, Virginia. Selaginella rupestris 'Bald Knob' forms a ground-hugging, rock garden-sized evergreen groundcover of fuzzy green moss-like foliage to 2" tall x 2' wide in 10 years. This unique sub-alpine spikemoss has thrived in our sunny rock garden despite our heat and humidity. In drought, Selaginella rupestris 'Bald Knob' shrivels like a resurrection fern, only to return to normal within hours of a rain. In the winter months, the foliage turns a lovely bronzy purple. Having the largest natural range of any North American spikemoss, Selaginella rupestris is very easy to grow in a wide range of conditions from alkaline to acidic and from hot to cold.
