Scutellaria 'Appalachian Blues' is a new North Creek Nursery introduction of a hybrid between two US native woodland skullcaps, Scutellaria serrata and ovata. The small clumps, which are similar to Scutellaria serrata, reach 1' tall x 20" wide, clothed with thumb-size green leaves that emerge with a narrow black border. The deciduous clump is topped, starting for us in early May, with stalks of violet flowers that rise 4" above the mound of foliage. This is an outstanding addition to the shade garden, as a companion with ferns, hellebores, hosta, and wild gingers.
