Sarracenia 'Bug Bat' is the ultimate horticultural hoodie. This vigorous pitcher plant selection originated as a Larry Mellichamp seedling discard and was introduced by the late David Crump. Larry thinks this is most likely a cross of Sarracenia psittacina x Sarracenia minor var. okefenokeensis. The upright, 16" pitchers of Sarracenia 'Bug Bat' are green at the bottom and cinnamon red toward the tip with tiny white windows in the hood back, thanks to the Sarracenia minor parent. The giant pitchers come with an attached red hood which darkens in the summer sun. Slightly moist soil and no chemical fertilizers are the keys to success.
