(aka: Salvia PAS1246577) Salvia 'Big Blue' is a Ball/Pan Am Seed introduction of a cross of Salvia longispicata x Salvia farinacea. Although the cross is the same that produced the 1979 introduction, Salvia 'Indigo Spires', this is a dramatic improvement, almost certainly a ploidy (doubled chromosome) shift. For us, it produces a 4' tall x 3' wide, tight clump that includes the dramatic 1' tall floral spikes of dark bluish-purple from early June (NC) until frost. Salvia 'Big Blue' is as good of an accent plant as it is a bee magnet.
