Sabal 'Blackburniana' is one of the elusive mysteries in the hardy palm world. Some references say it's the same as Sabal palmetto, but our plants look nothing like that species, and it is dramatically more winter hardy than Sabal palmetto. Others call it the same as Sabal domingensis, but it's smaller and more winter hardy. Most likely, it's an old hybrid seed cultivar with no wild populations. It has great value as one of the most winter hardy trunked sabal palms we can grow. Sabal 'Blackburniana' has thrived for us since 2008, enduring winter temperatures of 7 degrees F, unscathed. Our 10 year old plants are now 6' tall x 7' wide with leaves that average 4.5' wide. Thanks to the Huntington Gardens for sharing seed for our original stock plants (HG51022).
