Ruscus aculeatus 'Sparkler' is a fourth named form of self-fruiting butcher's broom, this one shared by plantsman John Elsley, who brought it to the US from his native England. This clone of the spiny-leafed evergreen matures at 2' tall x 2' wide. Like all members of the species, it is insanely tough and drought tolerant. Although it prefers shade in the wild, our clumps, which receive several hours of hot afternoon sun have thrived. The clumps are adorned with hundreds of bright red berries from fall through spring.
