Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty' has been the holy grail of many shade gardeners, but supply has always outstripped demand. We are pleased to once again offer this dazzling hybrid mayapple, a vigorous hybrid of the Chinese Podophyllum delavayi. If you secretly admired kids with the measles when you were young, this style of variegation is for you. Each 1.5' tall, fuzzy, red stalk of Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty' is topped with two 18" wide tropical-looking leaves, heavily mottled with measles-like splotches that emerge purple and age to dark green...a surreal statement in the woodland garden. Dangling just below the leaves starting in late April (NC) are 8-10 incredible bright red flowers, resembling shredded mop heads. In the woodland garden, moist, organically rich soils produce the best plants, although these don't spread or go summer dormant like our US native mayapple.
