(aka: Dysosma mairei) Podophyllum mairei is a very rare Chinese mayapple species, and much of what is sold in cultivation is mis-identified. Podophyllum mairei is somewhat similar in form to Podophyllum boreale. Both are green-leaved species, but P. mairei forms a shorter, 2' tall specimen and usually develops two leaves as opposed to one. In early spring, the clusters of pinkish red, umbrella-like flowers burst open like fireworks from just below the top leaf. Like all of the Asian mayapples, Podophyllum mairei is a clump former that remains green until fall. Podophyllum mairei was first collected in Yunnan, China by French missionary Edouard Maire (1848-1932), and subsequently named in his honor.
