Peltandra 'Purplicious', a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction, is one of the most amazing native plant selections we've ever grown. NC plantsman/naturalist Jesse Perry was botanizing near his Raleigh, NC home, when he spotted and subsequently rescued a dark purple-stemmed form of our native (Canada south to Texas) aquatic aroid, Peltandra virginica, growing in the midst of a typical green-stemmed patch. From a deciduous underground rhizome the 2' tall black purple stems emerge, each ending in a glossy green arrow-shaped leaf. Even in our hot summers, the stem color never fades. Peltandra virginica needs constantly wet soils to thrive. We have grown this standout seed strain for well over a decade and find that it comes extremely true from seed.
