(aka: Origanum tournefortii) Origanum calcaratum has proven to be one of the finest ornamental oreganos that we've grown. This vigorous species, hailing from limestone cliff crevices on the Greek Aegean Islands, forms a 15" tall x 3' wide patch of semi-woody stems, clothed with small, fragrant, hairy foliage. Starting for us in late June, the clumps are smothered with a dazzling display of small pink flowers. Hot sun, dry soils, and good drainage are the keys to success. Dittany of Amorgos also makes a great patio container specimen, although potted plants will need to be protected below 20 degrees F.
