Monarda luteola 'Coconut Lime' is a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of our selection of the virtually unknown and very rare (G2 rank) North American native yellow-flowered bee balm. Monarda luteola, which hails from a tiny region known as the Weches Geologic Formation on the Texas/Arkansas border, was only recognized as a new species in 2011. The 30" tall mildew-resistant clump of lemon-scented foliage, selected from the Arkansas genetics, expands in good soil to make a 5' wide patch in a single season. Although Monarda luteola doesn't run like the more aggressive species, it is not a plant for a small garden of intricate plant treasures. For us, Monarda luteola 'Coconut Lime' starts flowering in mid-May with blush yellow flowers that are truly a magnet for bumblebees.
