We received xMangave gonzaloi in 2007, shortly after it was described as a new agave species in 2004, from a plant found in a European Botanic Garden. It was formally described as an agave, but once we saw it, it was obvious it actually represented a cross of Agave and Manfreda. xMangave gonzaloi forms a 12" tall x 18" wide rosette of thick green leaves adorned with dark purple spots. The leaf spines are more plastic-like, resembling hybrids between the two genera. In our trials, xMangave gonzaloi has been winter hardy until temperatures drop into the single digits. If your area gets that cold, enjoy your plant in a container and bring it indoors for the winter.
