Manfreda 'Purple Passion' is one of the most exciting new succulent introductions in years, but we aren't able to specifically assign it to a genus. It was introduced as an xMangave, which it obviously is not. We thought it might be a Beschorneria hybrid, but the flowers didn't confirm that, so we're all left wondering. At this point, it seems most likely an un-named Mexican manfreda species. Regardless, it makes a fascinating garden specimen to 1' tall x 2' wide with glossy, wide, dark purple foliage. The rosettes are topped with 6' tall spikes of tubular yellow flowers in late spring. In the garden, it remains evergreen down to 20 degrees F. Where it isn't winter hardy, Manfreda 'Purple Passion' makes a stunning container specimen.
