Lobelia cardinalis 'Towering Inferno' is a 2022 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a seedling we found here at JLBG among a large patch of self-seeded cardinal flower. At 7' tall, this clone stood out above the rest, which ranged from 3-4' in height. The 2" wide stem base was necessary to hold this massive specimen upright. The typical bright red flower heads of Lobelia 'Towering Inferno', start flowering for us in late August, which is typical cardinal flower bloom time for us. Moist rich soils are best for it to achieve maximum height. Please keep in mind that if you allow it so seed, offspring will most likely not be as tall.
