Lilium michiganense 'Shelby' is a Shelby County, Alabama, discovery shared by native plantswoman Jan Midgley. The 4' tall stalks are clothed with whorled leaves and topped with 3-5 pendent flower buds that open in early June...3.5" wide orange red flowers with strongly recurved petals and a yellow/orange throat with cinnamon spots. Moist, rich soils and several hours of full sun are ideal for this stoloniferous native lily that forms a 2-3' wide clump in five years.
