Pancake juniper is a particularly diminutive version of the wonderful North American native groundcover, Juniperus horizontalis. This 1990s introduction was discovered in Newfoundland by the late plantsman Nick Nickou and UConn botanist Howard Pfeifer. The blue-grey foliage of Juniperus 'Pancake' creeps along the ground at a maximum height of a mere 3" tall, beautifully echoing each feature of the ground below. In winter, the foliage of the 4' wide patch takes on a purple hue...truly charming!
