(aka: Hypoxis argentea D24SA-121) I first met the white-haired South African stargrass, Hypoxis argentea, on our 2005 expedition to South Africa, where it grew on a grassy knoll (not THE grassy knoll) among large rocks at 2,300' elevation near the Eastern Cape town of Grahamstown. Hypoxis argentea has been superb and easy to grow in our garden, forming a 1' tall x 1' wide clump of upright grass-like foliage, covered in dense white silky hairs, and topped with 6-petalled bright yellow flowers starting in spring. We have found it to be an excellent dry rock garden subject, which dies back to an underground corm in winter. Hypoxis argentea is also quite in demand by non-gardeners due to its use as an immune booster for AIDS patients.
