    (aka: Tetraneuris herbacea) We are pleased to offer nursery-propagated plants of the eastern four-nerve daisy, Hymenoxys herbacea, currently listed as a USFWS endangered species. Hymenoxys herbacea differs from Hymenoxys acaulis by the lack of leaf hairs and disjunct distribution in isolated sites in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Canada. Scientists theorize that Hymenoxys herbacea originated during the xerothermic post-glacial global warming period when many prairie and mountain plants moved east and managed to survive the next global cooling period when many other migratees died out. In the garden, Hymenoxys herbacea makes small basal rosettes of 3" long, hairy, linear leaves topped with thin 15" tall stalks of yellow daisies in spring. Hymenoxys herbacea grows best in rocky, alkaline soils that drain well...a superb rock garden specimen. Our offering are propagations of the long-extinct Illinois population, which have been saved and been passed along by area rock gardeners. Unfortunately, these cannot be shipped outside of NC.
